The “it/on button,” the purpose of NALS is to ENGAGE, INSPIRE, PROMOTE, and ENHANCE opportunities for our members and others looking to enter into the legal profession. It’s each of our responsibilities as members to create opportunities for others to enter into the legal profession so they can be the best they can be.
So what are you doing to develop your “IT/ON BUTTON?” If you are doing nothing, why not? Think about how much you have to offer to others coming into the legal profession or for those already in the profession.
How many times did you wish there had been someone to help you along the way when you first entered into the legal field? Let’s make it easier for others who are entering this awesome profession by turning on our IT/ON BUTTON. I challenge each of you to turn on your button today and let me know what you are doing and how you are doing it!
Well, I didn’t know what the 5 C’s of Success were until I attended the NALS Professional Development Conference in March. I found out that the five Cs were:
Commitment – Success shows in the commitment to our association, to ourselves, and to our employers.
Communications – You are the public relations person for your association and the legal profession.
Contribution – You contribute to your association’s future by becoming a volunteer and by reaching out to prospective members.
Confidence – Being aware of and take pride in what you are good at.
Community – Each member is an integral part of our association’s tradition of providing and achieving excellence in our jobs, in our association, and our community.
It’s amazing what you will learn at a conference through NALS and how much you will learn about yourself and the others in your association. If you have not attended a professional development conference, a NALS national conference, or even a regional conference, you should make it one of your goals this year. You won’t be disappointed.
Tanya James, PLS
Director of Membership (2011-2012)
Well, I can hardly believe that this year has literally flown by and I am now looking at the end of my term as Director of Membership. I had such high goals for myself in this role as well as for our state association. However, running my own business got in the way. That’s the bad news. The good news is that I have been talking with your incoming Director of Membership, Tanya James, and we will be sharing ideas and working with her in reaching goals for the new fiscal year.
I am very excited to report that our membership continues to grow, albeit not as quickly as I personally would like, but slow and steady wins the race. Tucson's Participation Pays program has seen an increase in numbers to their monthly meetings. And Yavapai and Phoenix have also seen good attendance at their monthly meetings and events.
Wow! I cannot believe we are already in August. Time has literally flown by since our installation in May. Right off the bat, a number of Arizona members attended the NALS Region 8 Conference on our cruise to Ensenada. Those that attended had an absolutely wonderful time. And it was great to get away from home and work and chill, enjoy the entertainment, get together with old friends from previous conferences and meet new friends who were in attendance. Two weeks after the Region 8 Conference, I traveled to Florida to attend the AAERT Annual Conference, of which I’m also a member, and which was also a cruise, this time to Cozumel.
In my travels to our conferences and now being Director of Membership on the state level, I began to think of why it was I joined NALS oh, so many years ago. And the very first reason that came to mind was education and networking.
